The Legend of Angel Lake
This is the legend from one of big islands in Indonesia, that is
South Kalimantan. This legend comes from Pematang Gadung village, Sungai Raya
Sub-district, Hulu Sungai Selatan District, South Kalimantan province. Once
upon a time, there was muscular and handsome man was going through inside the
jungle. His name was Awang Sukma. He went to the jungle to explore the life
inside. When he was in the middle of the jungle, he felt fascinated with
various kinds of the beauty inside the jungle. After that, Awang Sukma directly
built a home over there. He felt that the life in the jungle was harmonious and
peaceful. He also had a good relationship with the whole dwellers in the
jungle. Because of this factor, all the dwellers recognized him as the master
of the jungle and he got a new titled, that was Datu. Since that moment, he was
called by Datu Awang Sukma.
After he became a master of the jungle, he walked around in his
territory once in a month. One day, when he did his habit, he stopped in a
lake. The location of the lake was under the shady trees. That lake was not too
deep but the water was very clear and it looked like a mirror. Datu Awang Sukma
was impressed by the uniqueness of the lake. He thought, “What a wonderful
lake! It has a magnificent miracle inside.” He did not understand why some
trees around the lake could be fertile and produced a lot of fruits. Not only
that, but there were also various birds lived safely around the lake and flies
sucked at the nectar happily. He did love the lake, so he decided to stay
around the lake for a few days. Along the day he stayed there, he always played
a flute and then he got a new titled, that was Datu Suling. When he played a
flute, he performed melodious and touching songs which can entertain the
listener.
After a few days Datu Awang Sukma stayed around the lake, finally he
left it. He walked slowly but suddenly he heard something from the lake. He was
really curious. He thought, “What happened to this lake?” He decided to figure
it out. After that he found something incredible. He found 7 beautiful girls
were taking a bath in that lake. He mumbled, “Oh My God! I found 7 beautiful
girls here. Are they angels from the sky? What should I do then?” Afterwards,
he looked around and found their shawls. The angles enjoyed taking a bath in
the lake without caring about their shawls. There were 7 shawls. Those shawls were
used by those angles to fly back to the sky. They put their shawls in different
places, one of them was put on the branch of the tree. Datu Awang Sukma took
that shawl then. He mumbled, “This is the perfect time to know what happened if
I take one of their shawl.”
After Datu Awang Sukma got that shawl, those angles heard a call and
they had to fly back to the sky. They directly took their own shawl, except one
angle. They other angles had worn their shawl and flight to the sky. The angle
who did not find her shawl was the youngest of the seven children. She was
confused because her six sisters had flight to the sky and over there she was
alone. After that, Datu Awang Sukma came closer to her and said, “Don’t be
afraid my angle, I will help you if you agree to live with me.” At the
beginning, that angle was hesitant to accept his requirement but finally she
accepted because she knew that she did not have another option.
After a few months they live together, that angle was pregnant.
Finally, she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. One day, there was a black
chicken stood up on the rice barn. The angle tried to chase it away. After
that, she opened the rice barn and found his shawl. Her feeling was uncertain
among happy and angry to his husband. At last, she decided to leave her baby to
his husband and fly back to the sky. Datu Awang Sukma totally knew if that was
his mistake and he also felt guilty. He apologized to his wife but it did not
change the angle’s decision to fly back to the sky. Day by day, his daughter
grown up to be a beautiful woman and he could forget the angle slowly. Because
of this incident, Datu Awang Sukma swore and prohibited his offspring to raise
black chickens. It was considered to bring great disasters. Dwellers of
Pematang Gadung village obeyed that prohibition until present days.
